Excellent revision of an acoustic classic by Olga Belikov, recorded on a spring day in grade twelve. It literally doesn’t get better.
Vanessa and Nina recorded this intimate cover of Kate Nash’s “I hate Seagulls” during guitar class in the last week of May, 2011.
Musical Talons students, accompanied by Mr. Jackson, recorded this Take Away Show edition of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros‘ “Home” over the May Long Weekend’s Adventure Trip. Other notable videos from the district highschool gifted program’s visit to the National Historic Site include senior Olga Belikov’s spellbinding cover of Josh Ritter’s “Girl in the War,” and a duet between grade ten Donya Pourtaghi and Mr. J on M. Ward’s “Chinese Translation.”

Inspired by a recent matinee visitors and Jazz Dinner Dance headliners Rumba Calzada, a group of Gleneagle jazz students tested out some latin rhythms over lunch this week.
Inspired by the popular Blogoteque videos, Gleneagle guitar students were charged with creating their own Take Away Shows this semester. The idea was to present, and share students’ musical exploits however they could be achieved somewhere in the local community, be it the school building, or elsewhere in the Lower Mainland, and stay true to the original videos’ ethos.
A little background:
The Take away shows are la Blogotheque’s first video podcasts.
Every week, we invite an artist or a band to play in the streets, in a bar, a park, or even in a flat or in an elevator, and we film the whole session. Of course, what makes the beauty of it is all the little incidents, hesitations, and crazy stuff happening unexpectingly. Besides, we do not edit the videos so they look perfectly flawless, instead we keep the raw sound of the surroundings. Our goal is to try and capture instants, film the music just like it happens, without preparation, without tricks. Spontaneity is the keyword.
On the note of spontaneity, the following was recorded at the end of class on Thursday as an encore performance of Mishka’s final presentation of Death Cab for Cutie’s “I will follow you into the dark.” He had been joined by Kate’s vocals in class the day before, and Mr. Jackson suggested that AJ – who has been working out the finer points of the melodica this week – make the duo into a trio for the sake of a magical video moment. With teacher and iPhone in tow, Kate, Mishka and AJ went next door and captured this sublime cover.
