After ‘shopping’ around for a place to host and share Mp3 files easily on the web, Gleneagle has finally begun its tenure with an online musical community that fits with our department’s goal of getting our music heard, and shared with as many different people as possible.
Unlike typical “closed” communities, artists use ReverbNation as their home base for approaching marketing and promotion across the Internet as a whole — be it via social networks, blogs, or the artist’s homepage.
This openness was a major factor in Gleneagle Music opening an account with ReverbNation, as many other mp3 hosting sites fail to offer easy-to-embed and manageable public profile pages (Box.net, MySpace, etc). Because while we are unlikely to pursue the sale of much of the music we produce in our daily rehearsals, concerts and recording sessions, being able to retain ownership over our content, and have it travel free and easily across the web is central to our department’s goal:
Unlike other areas of the school such as the academic courses, athletics, and the visual arts, the beauty and power of many musical performances is fleeting. It is here, then gone. It is our hope that through digital means, we might connect with our audiences, near and far, and record our efforts for posterity.
